2008-01-01 & 2008-01-02 Water Droplets : I'd seen water drop photos like this and wanted to make a few of my own. My first dropper was a soup can with a hole punched in the bottom. It made drops too fast. I added some tape over the hole to control the rate. This worked ok but the drops were shed in different places. The 1st 3 photos were taken with this dropper. I added a 16 gage wire in the hole and then added layers over tape over the hole to tune the drop rate. I found that bending a U on the end of the wire made the drops larger. Now the drops were dropped from the same place. Canon EF-180mm f3.5L Macro at F22 or 32 on a Canon EOS 5D at ISO 400 and 1/60 sec. shutter worked best. The strobe I used is an old Sunpak 522 I had laying about in manual mode, it has ½ stop adjustments. The strobe was placed in a Westcott Halo and positioned off to the side and as close to the bowl as I could get it without getting in the way of the water drops. I’m thinking about taking off the halo and using a snoot and placing the strobe behind the drops. Maybe tonight 12/03/2007. I started with a white diner plate sized bowl that had about 15mm of water in it. Drops didn't rebound out of the bowl because it wasn't deep enough. Also photos didn't look as interesting as I’d hoped. I ended up with the 3 photos here and decided they looked best a monochrome. They are cropped and have the levels adjusted and blacks turned up. I’m considering using some gels on the strobe and trying this again. I went out shopping and found a cobalt blue bowl a little larger then a rice bowl, I’d like to find a lager bowl with colored glass for some more photos. I thought this one was a little small. I liked the results best when the bowl was filled over the rim with a positive meniscus. The waves created by the drops had a different shape when there was a positive meniscus then when there wasn’t.
